Hows it going? I have a 18' center console with a 70 evinrude model number E70tlend. Looks like its a 92. I pulled the cover off of the pistons and found the number 2 piston to be bad. Looks like 1/2 inch wide score is down the cylinder wall. Less than 1/16 deep. I was wondering what the options would be. Is there a way of sleeving the cylinder? Should I hone it out and get a bigger piston ring and new piston? Or is it not even worth tinkering with? I began to pull pieces off to free up removing the power head but I stopped until I get a manual. I have no clue about boat motors. I am a jeep guy . Thanks for your time. Here you can see the #2 piston. The top has melted some down to the ring and it is scored about a inch maybe more wide. The metal made its way into the small port on the wall also. Hopefully I can dig that out easy.

Kinda typical for those motors that are run a lot in the mid range. Or with the wrong spark plugs. Or with dirty carbs.

It'll most likely clean up with boring. They'll offest bore to try and pick up as much as possible from that side. If it won't clean at .040 then you can sleeve it.

From those shots it just looks like a standard rebuild with possibly a sleeve.

seems a little small for centerconsole 18 ft what is it rated for
i have a 17 ft mckee and it rated at 135 im running a 150 and all out it runs
40 was cosidering going smaller to save gas but dont want to get below 30 mps ,what kind of speed were you getting out of it and what type boat
and hull designe do you have ,so that i might compare ,mine runs that 40 mph
fully loaded 4 people and gear .

I agree a 70 may be a bit on the small side for an 18' boat. That engine does not like to be lugged and scoring number 2 may be a result of that.

When it is rebuilt, make sure the carburetors are gone through and a new water pump is installed.

Also, after break in, prop it to turn a minimum of 5800 RPM at wide open throttle. That will help with the lugging.

Points are definetly taken. It will be getting rebuilt over the winter. I have to get a factory service manual for the motor and begin rebuilding the carbs and pull apart the motor.

The boat I was told is a flat bottom but it is round along the sides. The front has a V-hull that flows into the flat bottom. Not sure what the style was built for. It was built on Cape Cod. 1977 Pointer.
