I have an old Johnson 3.0, that I got for free. After a tear down and clean up I got it back together and it had no spark. Carb is cleaned and so are the contacts. It has good spark and new plugs now. It ought to have everything she needs. However I don't have the timing right I guess because I cant get her to pop off. I forgot how the flywheel goes on and which plug wire goes to the top cylinder. One of the wires has a metal clamp on it. There are two marks on the flywheel. I need to know what they mean and how they relate to the throttle position any info will help. Thank you.

First, Aaron, give us the model number. Johnny 3s were made for about 60 years and they are not all the same.

Re: Johnson 3.0 timing trouble.

It sounds like you are talking about an old one. There is nothing to "time" other than setting the points at exactly .020" gap at their widest opening. Those marks you are referring to are for a special tool to make setting the points easy and quick. Great for a pro charging by the hour, but you don't need it.

The wire with the band goes on the upper spark plug, and is the coil closest to the front of the engine.

Make sure you properly torque the flywheel nut to specs. That would be 40 ft/lbs on the old ones. Failure to do that will cause a sheared key and flywheel and shaft damage....and out of time.
