I have a 1975 evinrude 40 hp model number 40555c. I just put a new carb kit and water pump kit on it and now I want to know how much it is worth. Don't tell me to look at the NADA value either. Tell me how much you would ask if you were the one selling it. I just sold a 75 evinrude 25hp two months ago for $450, so a 40hp should be worth $800, right?

Dad sold one similar to yours either a 75 or 76 model in spring of '06 for around $400. It was electric start and was remote steered(not tillered). I think i saw one the same model as his go on eBay at that time for $500.
NADA in my opinion isn't a reliable price guide for older motors.Newer ones probably reflect a better estimate.

I have a 86 model 6hp 'Rude and it's about $50-60 NADA doubt I'll sell it for that.

What condition is it in? It's probably only worth from $300-400, frankly. 30 year old 40 hp outboards are not all that in demand out there.

Check prices that ones like yours have sold for on eBay.

After an intro like that who wouldn't want to help you.

Its actually harder to sell a 1970's 40 hp than a 25 hp. I'd expect to get the same amount. I certainly wouldn't pay $800 CDN for it so I think you'll have trouble getting that much US. That motor is about $500 CDN where I am. However, there is a large number of used outboards here so its really a buyers market.

Check the NADA value for it against the 25 hp and you'll get an idea of what the difference is.

i agree with wbeaton, the 40 is between the small popular motors and the bigger high speed motor. there is just a certain market for them. i just paid $400 for a 1988 40 hp. and $250 for a 73 50hp.
