Change short to long shaft?

This might be a dumb question, but I don't know. I have a great running 1966 Merc 500 bolted to my boat....problem is due to my lack of knowledge it is a short shaft.....I need a long shaft. Can a long shaft lower unit be interchanged with the short? If so how hard would this surgery be? I have the service manual....next thing will be finding a long shaft lower unit.....if possible at all.

Thanks

Shouldn't be any more difficult than replacing a water impeller. Just unbolt the current lower unit and mid-unit and find a newer long one to put in its place. The powerhead shouldn't make a difference, that's why motor makers are able to offer both so easily.
