Default '95 Mercury 90hp Overheat Sensor

I was out on the water this weekend when out of no where the overheat sensor went off, the steady beep, not the interval beep of the low oil level. I first checked and made sure that there was water coming out of the outboard so I knew there were no clogs in the intake. I also noticed that the temp gauge was working fine and was right where it normally would be. I lowered to idle and gave it time but it didn't quit going off. I got out of the water, drove the boat home, and 45 minutes later started her up to flush her out and the alarm was going off the second I turned the key. I tried again this morning and the same thing.
Is this just a faulty sensor or could it be a bigger problem.
If I just need to get the a new sensor and have it put in how much should that run?
Thanks for any help.

Unplug the sensor to make sure thats the problem and if the horn goes away replace the sensor it's a very easy job
