Default How do you hook up a Trim Gauge?

Perhaps this thread should be combined with the previous one on the trim issue.
Anyhow does anyone know what a Trim gauge hooks up to? Outdrive? Outboard? Trim/Tilt unit? some sort of sending unit in the back of the boat? Can you buy a kit for the non-gauge part of the deal?
It seems to me it should be something sensitive to the level of the boat and not necessarily to the trim angle of the motor or am I wrong on this?
Note: I recently bought a trim gauge for my 18'w/ outboard and I'm not sure where to go with this and what it takes to mount it and get it working.
I'd be glad to have any input on this!!

They hook up to a sending unit made for that motor. I believe they make a universal one but I've never installed one.

It is a '90/90hp Force...currently without trim and tilt. (note: I have a t/t unit I might put on this engine once I'm sure it is in good working condition)
Thanks.
