Default 1987 Yamaha 150 2 stroke - gauge and buzzing

Hello everyone,

I have a couple questions/concerns that I hope are just me being a boatnub.

On my 19' CC i have a Yamaha 150 V6 2 stroke that runs fine but I did notice something yesterday while running the boat. On the tach cluster at the bottom there are 3 symbols (overlook the descriptions plz):

Bottom left: something that looks like a setting sun with a red background
Middle: oil can w/ yellow background
Bottom right: a full sun w/ green background

Well while I was running along I noticed that the green and yellow started flashing back and forth and if I slowed down, the green would come on and stay on. I have no idea what that means or any of the sequences that the cluster may have. Any help with that would be great.

Now, when I get the boat home, I hook up the water hose, make sure water is flowing from the bottom ports, start the motor, water flows from the water pump and as I go to turn the motor off, I get a loud buzzing sound from the switch and all 3 symbols at the bottom of the tach cluster are on. Have I dont something wrong to ruin the motor or could it be something else.

Thx for any help.

The three symbols are for oil tank. When the yellow comes on, it is time to add oil to the boat mounted tank. When the level drops close to the yellow and boat is sloshing it around. Fill the tank and it should be fine. The buzzing is likely because you are getting the motor hot while running on the hose. Muffs not fitting correctly or low water pressure will cause this.
Those are tough old motors and you have not likely hurt it yet. If you learn how to operate and take care of it properly they are very reliable and long lived.

I have a 1986 115 v4 model and have the same lights on my tach. The middle yellow is like was said above and the external tank needs oil added to it. The green on the right means that the external oil tank and the tank inside the cowling are full enough. If the one on the left comes on that means that you are almost out of oil. The buzzing could have been overheat or it also buzzes when the oil level is verry low. You might want to make sure that the external tank is filling the smaller tank under the cowling when it gets low. With the key on you can let some of the oil out of the tank under the cowling and once it gets about 1/2 empty the external tank should kick on and fill it back up if its hooked up properly. You can also sound that buzzer by taking the lid off of the smaller oil tank under the cowling. When you take the cap off the motor thinks that the oil level is verry low so it sounds that buzzer.

DO NOT remove the engine mounted oil tank sensor.
most have a seal between the sensor filter and the tank. not only can you fill the pump with trash but if the seal falls off and gets stuck in the oil pump intake hose you WILL trash the motor.
if you need to remove the engine oil tank sensor drain the tank first then retrive the seal and replace it with a new one.
some of the early V yamahas dont use a screen, these can be identified by the lack of a vynil tube (water trap) on the bottom of the engine oil tank.
yellow lamp lit indicates eithe low remote tank level or an open cicuit on the switch wireing. normal oil transfer will NOT occur if the yellow lamp is lit.
