Hello everybody
I want to ask if it is possible to set the timing (by ear)wrong and the engine still works at idle good without indicating that something is going wrong.I am asking this because when i dissasembled the distributor at tdc the rotor looked the #6 point instead of #1(not absolutely sure). My initial problem is i can't ran at high rpm.(i know it may be a fuel delivery problem and i can't find temporarily a timing light).
And something else,
What may mean black water when taking out the hoses through the starboard side manifold?

Re: question about the timing (gm305 with points)

Yes.....
The reason that the rotor is pointing at #6 is that the engine is in the #6 firing position, not the #1.....
I'd wager that if you revolve the engine one more time to TDC, it will be pointing to #1.....
You really need to invest in a timing light that has the advance feature....
& a dwell meter....
Tuning by ear might seem like it is good, but too far advanced will cause detonation & result in a hole in the piston....;)
The black water is normal from the metal in the manifolds......;)
If you cannot get to WOT & beyond while in neutral, I doubt that it is a fuel condition, more likely timing.....
