Nope. Just be sure you set the point dwell FIRST, then set the timing.

Ypu....
Points first, then timing....
There is no 'base mode' on a points type system.....
Only on TB V.....;)

alright ... I checked the compression stroke on # 1 with the timing mark on the crank and as it''s at TDC the crank timing mark is at 9 0'clock as opposed to being at 2. Why is it so far off?

Move the plug leads so that the rotor is pointing at #1 on the dist cap with the engine at TDC in the #1 firing position.....;)

found my problem...there is another timing mark on the harmonic balancer against the engine.. this may be common knowledge to most of you but I was using the long one closer to the engine mount. Anyway... I used the other one and was able to get it to 8 degrees TDC. It was running about 180 degrees engine temp. Is that the norm?
