I have a dilemma on my 2 stroke 75HP Merc. In considering to install a Tilt/Trim guage I was shocked to not see what I considered a standard Trim hydraulic setup with the two Trim pins on the lower end of the tilt assembly.
I found a schematic labelled "Tilt/Trim Schematic" for the 75 Merc and it appears the same as mine. There is only one vertical lift cylinder on the motor, does/can this handle both tilt and trim??
In previous boats I've always had the two hydraulic trim pins to "trim" the motor/boat, in or out depending on load.
I'm also concerned about damaging the tilt piston or assembly by mistakenly using a trim that doesn't exist.
I bought the boat a couple of weeks ago (from a dealership) and it was advertised with tilt and trim, but to my fault didn't ask or verify this question at the time.
I guess a second question is if this is both tilt and trim, can I install a "generic" TILT/TRIM guage?

Re: Trim/Tilt question for '96 75HP Merc 2 stroke

It's a trim/tilt. S ingle ram systems have been around for a long time. Mercury Racing used one referred to as the Log Splitter. They used them on V-6s back in the 70s and 80s. The 90s versions are for smaller than V-6 motors. They have trim and tilt ranges in the same cylinder. Johnson/Suzuki has a dual cylinder design with basically a telescoping ram within a ram. So your dealer didn't advertise falsely. You have trim/tilt.

There is a trim sender that attaches over one end of the upper pin. There's a slot in the pin that twists a potentiometer which moves the gauge needle.
