Planning on fishing in the Gulf and need to know what is the best basic setup on rods and lines and hooks. I was told any good rods and reels and 30 lb test and single hooks not treble. I am new to saltwater fishing but would like to setup a good set of gear. Help???

Re: Saltwater Gear

Depends what you are going after. I'd start with a couple of medium-heavy action spinning rods and reels with 20 lb test. Maybe also pick up a conventional reel that will handle about 300 yds of 30 lb test. I'm still using a 20+ year old Penn 60 that I've had since new. You can pick up some of the old Penn Long Beach series reels, now out of production, at reasonable prices used. If taken care of, they are impossible to break and last forever- I am a huge fan of these reels.

Re: Saltwater Gear

Thanks for the info. I am not sure what I will be fishing for? Would love to catch some grouper, snapper, and tuna. But I do not know enough about saltwater fishing. I am hoping to find out some good info in this forum.
