recently took boat out for first time and promptly hit a rock. After tow, found engine to run fine but will not turn prop when put in gear. What should we expect to be broken. This is an a 1976 Evenrude 85 hp outboard. Have just looked up how to drop lower end.

Re: Motor will not drive prop

Welcome to iboats!

Before you go dropping the lower unit, have a look at the prop. You've probably spun your prop. The prop has a rubber inner hub that is designed to spin when you hit an obstruction, protecting the gear train. Remove prop, mark position of inner and outer hub with wax pencil. Remount prop and try running motor on lake again. Remove prop and look to see that your previous mark has not moved. If the marks don't line up, you've spun the prop. Most dealers will send your prop out for repair to have it re-hubed.

Thanks for the quick comeback. You may just have just have saved us a whole lot of frustration and time. Will try your advice this weekend. Thought there must be some sort of safety device designed to save the drive. Did not know it was actually in the prop itself.

Is there a shear pin in those big models? I'm not sure. But when you remove the prop, you'll see!

No shear pin on those.
