1992 4.3l Merc V-6 Running rich

I have been having troubles starting the engine once it has been running for a while. It seems like it is starved for fuel when I am cranking it over. Most of the time to start it I have to give it some gas. It usually starts right away after that. Once it does start it is puffing some black smoke out the exhaust. This leads me to believe it is flooding it with fuel. I have not touched anything on the motor as of yet, other than replacing the fuel filter. Is it reccomended to add any carb cleaner to the fuel?? I think it just may need a good tune up but if anyone has some suggestions. I would greatly appreciate it. Once the engine is being pushed a bit it runs perfectly.

What is the choke doing when you start? It may be mis-adjusted and/or stuck.

I'd be looking at the choke first. If OK, looking for excess fuel in the throat of the carb, possibly a stuck float.
surely sounds like a carb issue.

Not sure. I have to pull the cover after work and give it the ole' once over.

I have an identical situation with my 1989 4.3 liter. Curious on what you find out. Can the choke be adjusted? what about the mixing screw?
