So im reading a lot of these i have no reverse problems but no one can really answer the question, its more or less well maybe its this or maybe its that. Heres my problem, i purchased a 1989 today with and omc/king cobra I/O its a 5.7 litre 350. anyway, everythings great we pick it up and run it in the driveway and it sounds great starts great everything seems perfect. We took it down to the river and i get in the boat put it in reverse and just god awful grinding. so hesitant to take it out my girlfriend and i had no choice but to shove off and pray forward worked (which it did very well) but i cant seem to find a problem with anything. The outdrive was just rebuilt actually we installed it this morning and im pretty sure that he did it correctly. now i have heard it was a cable or the solenoid on the distributor and then also the lower unit. so who out there has had my problem and what has fixed it?

Re: New Boat No Reverse

If the drive was just put back on was the lower cable adjusted to the exact specs stated in the Factory OMC service manual?
That includes the very crucial adjustment of the nutruel position of the lower cable bell crank.
Its all in the manual unless you have a Seloc or Clymers manual.
At least i hope you have a manual.....;)

See if this helps,,
