Not sure what year the 2 stroke 25hp Sportster is. The spark plugs spark- very little gas gets to the plug- compression feels good- tank is properly vented. It will not start or even give a hint of starting. Could the gas line be blocked ?? If so what can be done? Is it the fuel filter?

more history, model number, has it been sitting a couple of months or years. last service done to it. go to the engine faq forum, read outboard won't start, and awakening a sleeping outboard.

As well as what TD said, try spraying some 50:1 premix in the carb and see it it catches at all. If so then you have carb probs. If not you have ignition probs.
I have a 1970 25 hp sportster... when I first got mine, I found out the spring that activates the choke butterfly on the outside of the carb had a notch worn into it, so would catch and the choke would usually not work properly (but occasionally it slide over the catch and it'd work ok)...
I took the carb off, took that spring off, and unwound it 1 coil so that it was smooth at the point that it rubs on the butterfly cam... the choke's been working well for ~ 5 years now. When I found this, I figured it must be a really common problem on these oldies, but I've never heard of anyone else having it.

The serial number for this engine is 25103S - E02944. That is the number on the plate which is on the lower shaft. How does this number help?? Where can I find out what the number means?
