Hi. I'm used to working on car engines and this is my 1st boat engine rebuild. I took off the carb and manifold and can now see the crank and end of the piston rod. The problem is, the whole compartment including the crank and piston rod are bone dry, to the point that they are even starting to rust. How are these parts supposed to get oil if the oil is just added to the gas? And there doesn't appear to be anyplace to add oil into the engine... I'm very confused... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The only oil it gets is that which you put in the gas. All the fuel that the motor burns passes through the crankcase on it's way to the cylinder. Keep in mind that the oil is used only once. Therefor it is always cool and clean. It doesn't keep going round and round and getting hot, dirty and cruddy like a 4-stroke. You might want to read up on 2-cycle engine theory of operation. There are tons of books on it.
Edit: The rust you see is why they should be fogged before storage.
