I read some threads about steering problems but need specific direction before i proceed. I have 1999 Johnson 50hp Remote steering and the cable is stuck inside the tube. Problem is i loossened the nuts on either side of the tube and the steering wheel now moves but cable still stuck. Then unbolted the engine from the transom to get a better shot at the port side if cable and forgot the nuts were off. I used a block and pounded port sided of cable and it seems the whole tube has now moved about 3". Am i now committed to pounding the tube all the out somehow and how?

Re: Steering Tube Problems

drive it back as far as you can, then get a rod (drift pin) and drive it out. very common problem when they are not serviced regularly. the throughly clean the tilt tube. iboats sells a steering tube brush, you put in a drill to clean them out.
