I have a pretty old motor that is currently running and i was just curious about how often i should take off the lower unit and check the water pump for wear and tear. I have never checked it before and i have no idea if it has been looked at in the past. The last thing i want is for it to go out on me. Thanks

If you've never looked at it, and don't know when the last time it was replaced, then drop the lower unit and do it. Rule of thumb is every 2 or 3 years for a pump.

Not a bad idea to do for insurance and it's an easy job.

i do it every 2 years, if the motor is use regularly, to use them is better than to let them sit.

Believe me when it lets go, as in a spun hub, it's too late. By then you can just put the whole thing out to the street for the trash pickup.
