Having vibration problems when I steer, also a "tock, tock, tock" sound when I was flushing. Read thread here to see specifics. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=213098

Only thing I see wrong is the heated area on the input shaft. Gimball is nice and smooth U-joints have no play, everything looks great??????
Any input as to why I am getting vibration as I steer? Tocking.knocking sound when in neutral? Drive is down when I flush.
Thanks

In the first picture looking into the bellows on the top right, see the little bulge where the bellows meets the drive, kinda see a clump of the bellows adhesive? Is that bulge normal?

Re: Pulled drive, have a look.

I have had the same issue and still have the same issue. It's been checked out twice by a marina and no issue's were found, i even went as far as stringing a line on top of the leg and turning in it 180 degree's and there is about 1/8 variance.

But after two alignment check's she will shrudder when turned hard left or right. this should be intresting.

Hey TG, long time no talk..:D
I even changed props to see if that fixed it,nope....
Does your drive shaft have the extreme heat discoloring like mine? Why would it get so dang hot?
I just stuck the alignment tool in and I can see grooves in the grease all the way around, so the alignment is dead on....
Do you get the knocking sound while flushing too?
Thanks for taking a peek.

Are we talking vibration (like something out of balance) or a shudder (like a PS problem) that is two completely different things.
The PS shudder is easy, the vibration I don't have a clue.

PS, that heated area is normal.

Hey Mr.Don. I was hoping you would drop back in.:)
I think TailGunner's description of a "shutter" might be more appropriate. Maybe like the prop is cavitating type shutter. PS=Power steering? What do I do to check for that?

P.S. Is it normal to have the knocking type noise at the u-joint area? Is it a given that the driveshaft/u-joint assembly is balanced? My unit was ordered directly from volvo penta.

Re: Pulled drive, have a look.

Looks like the o-rings on the shaft where it goes through the gimbal bearing are a little flat --- they can cause a noise that sounds like u-joint knocking. Suggest that you replace them.
The color of the shaft is normal --- that what new ones look like.
Shaft splines look dry, suggest spline grease on them.
Don't see any bump in the picture.
Is that special lube 101 that you are using to grease the gimbal bearing?
Good Luck Muc

Re: Pulled drive, have a look.

The shudder I am talking about is the whole drive actually shaking left and right. The vibration is more of a feeling, but not as sever as the shudder from power steering.
I gotta go eat. Back soon.

I am not sure what it is, but it's tacky (sticky) as h#ll.
Roger on the o-rings

HMMmmmm, that might be. I never thought to look back there while it did it.
Would that have something to do with the hydraulic rams? I noticed today as I pulled the drive that the drive lowered down when I removed only one ram. Should of the other ram held up the drive?
I also noticed a small oil slick at the rear every time I looked back there but I checked the drive oil, no water at all, I figured it was some rich exhaust fumes, she's been acting a little "loaded up". Maybe I have a small ram leak? I did notice the level dropped a tad but only maybe,, 3 oz's. Didn't even bother putting any back in.

Re: Pulled drive, have a look.

I've never had it off, TG dont go where he hasnt been before. But i know the maraina owner and voiced a bit of concern, after two checks and 500 scoot's if it fail's it's a big turd in his lap.

No funny noise's shifing when the muff's are on but there is a audible whine when the boat is leg is turned hard to the left or right. Now when in the water a shuddering vibration can be heard and felt on hard left or right turn's most noticable at 2000 rpm and digging hard.

Note that when on muff's it's a bit of high mech whirring noise, no vibration when turning hard left or right. One last note is when using a 3 blade prop and when she's fully trimmed @ wot i will get a low freq rumble in the boat and this will not happen with a 4 blade

By the way we both have the same boat and drive's, engine's different though mine a 4.3 gi and old hot rodder has a 350......:(

Re: Pulled drive, have a look.

The power steering shudder I am talking about is violent, and worse when out of the water. It also has nothing to do with the trim system. When those drives are hard over Port or Stbd, and/or trimmed all the way down at the same time, they will set up a vibration harmonic. It's normal.
