I just got this 1988 Lowe bass boat with an Evinrude 48 SPL . Every so often the boat will race up at idle in neutral, to the point where I dare not shift. it seems to happen when it has already warmed up, been out on the lake. Today it happened again, so I shut it off, then it would not restart. Had to use the trolling motor all the way back to the boat landing. when at home, I lowered the trim and noticed black oil/gas running out of the prop....
is this a serious problem???
Thanks

i think you have a linkage problem, that is not working properly, had an 88 88spl the lock nut on the linkage vibrated loose, and the linkage vibrated and did the same thing. you need a manual, and do a link and sinc. the black goo is oil fuel carbon, just running out. it also could be a carb running lean.

thanks for the advice, I will take a look at the linkage. The motor has very low hours on it, and every thing under the cover looks in mint cond. I was wondering though if the power trim/tilt is pulling on the linkage? I do tilt up when fishing in shallow waters....???

the tilt should not as the trunion adjustment nuts as secured under the cover, holding the cables.
