I purchased a 9.9 evenrude outboard and I can not get water to the engine. I put a new impeller and housing on with all new gaskets. I made sure the impeller has the little key in place. I even put the lower unit in a bucket of water and put a drill on the shaft. When I turn the drill on and watch the output hole in the impeller housing there is very little water coming out. Not enought to push up the tube to the motor. I am stumped. Put old housing back on with new impeller and same thing. Any one out there have an idea what is going on.???? wspann wspann@tampabay.rr.com

Be sure you have enough water. The water should be up about 2" from the exhaust hole on the back of the housing.

I agree with 67 6hp. All you probably need is a little more hydrostatic pressure to force water into the pump (deeper water). I had that same problem once.

Re: evenrude 9.9 waterpump

Hi, I picked up a nice clean 1976 Johnson 4hp this afternoon at a yard sale.
The motor starts up and idles fine, but I am having trouble telling if the water pump is working - where is the pee hole on this model ? I ran it in a barrel, and there is some spray coming out of 4 little holes in the back of the lower unit, but not much and only on one side !
thx.

Wspann, Welcome to iboats!

You'll need to place the pump lower in the water. The pump can't pull water up and into the impeller housing. Reassemble motor and run in a barrel making sure water is higher than the pump. Be sure to grease the drive shaft splines when you mount the lower unit.

keukalaker, your motor doesn't have a 'tell tale' or pee stream. The misting of water from the small holes in the exhaust leg is your assurance the water pump is working. BTW, start your own thread if you have questions about your motor.

I did the same test with my 18hp lower unit. I put the thing in a barrel of water. Put the tube in the pump. Got my 1/2" drill that does 550 rpm and turned the shaft. My water shot out about 7-8" out of the pipe. It turned out to be fully adequate.

It's always a good practise to blow your garden hose or compressed air through the water pipe while you have the lower unit off anyways to clean out any debris and reassure yourself that it's clean.
