97 200hp evinrude starter keep breaking top housing
ok i replaced the starter 3 time and every time it cranks and starts a few times and then crackes the starter right of the top what can do that please help me i spent over 800 dollars on starters its a 97 200 hp o/b evinrude starter part # is sierra no 18-5619..thank you
Re: 97 200hp evinrude starter keep breaking top housing
Need some more info about what cracks exactly where.....pics would be great.
While you're getting that, manually screw the bendix out so that it engages the flywheel completely (may have to pull the plugs as the crankshaft will have to be turned some to get the gear all the way up and full engagement).
With the bendix all the way up and teeth fully engaged, how much gap is there between the tip of the bendix's teeth and the flywheel's gear....measured in the hollow of the flywheel gear where the tip of the bendix tooth rests?
While in this position, is there any slop in the bendix....can you rock it back and forth, if so, how much?
Let the bendix return to rest and grasp the shaft of the starter as near the end as possible. Is there any play? Like can you rock it back and forth?

Go to www.photobucket.com, then read on. Quite easy to upload the photo, then click on the "Image" hyperlink under the photo, then paste that link here. You'll figure it out I'm sure.

I wish I could comment on that. I've worked on 2 or 3 of those engines and I'll tell ya...... I never saw anything like that, ever!
Towing.... IN PhotoBucket, you'll notice that there are 3 or 4 choices under the pictures you upload. One of those will actually insert the picture in your post. Something you might want to check out someday BUT your hyperlink setup here works fine.
Re: 97 200hp evinrude starter keep breaking top housing
well i replaced the aftermarket starter with a oem starter from the dealer and i just started it about 40 times and it seems ok..if i run the motor on the water ears would the motor over heat? it indicated hot after a while.is that normal or do you think the water pump went ????thank you for your time
Re: 97 200hp evinrude starter keep breaking top housing
Never run the motor over 1500 rpm on the "muffs", and never for too long. Your motor will "run away" on you with catastrophic consequences. I believe your thermostats should open at 145 def F. They may be shot. When is the last time the impeller was replaced?
Re: 97 200hp evinrude starter keep breaking top housing
i just bought the boat about 2 months ago and the guy told me he had just put in a water pump and thermostate.i hade it on ideal.do you think it would be ok in the water?it does pump water out the pee whole
Re: 97 200hp evinrude starter keep breaking top housing
Since you got her fixed, no need to pursue this farther. However, first guess would be the bendix gear jamming against the flywheel and pushing against the end support bushing which cracked/broke the housing.......alignment problem. Following my suggestion to measure the clearance would have been futile as the end support was not there to support the gear like when it was first installed.
Your engine should have overtemp sensors so the powerhead overheating on muffs shouldn't be a problem, observing the low rpm only warning High Trim mentioned.
One thing however, is the lower unit gearbox. There is not much cooling for that like when the engine is in the water so you want to minimize running for that reason if for no other.
As mentioned, 200 hp is a big engine and should be thirsty. Muff water could be inadequate for much running......course low rpm's helps.
