Question evinrude ,horse power?

I have a rude 140hp. 1979 model, I heard that its only 140 hp at the flywheel, not at the prop, and nowa days the hp. is measured at the prop?
so if this is true, wats the hp at the prop on my 140?? and wat year did they stop measuring at the flywheel?? I rebuilt this rude my self but rather have a pro set the timing on it since I don't totaly understand how to do it,I have around $1680.00 invested in parts and having pro's retime it and do a link & sync.and a couple of used carbs.Im feeling like I went the wrong way with it,I could have bought a rebuilt power head for less than what I have in parts and some labor with this one.now I will have to try props on it to get the correct prop for the set up. I think I shoulda just bought another complete boat. wats your opinion on this guy's??

The OMC V4's went to prop rated hp in 1985. Depending on who's dyno you look at yours is anywhere from 110 to 115 propshaft hp. Now torque is a whole different story.......

If you can find a good, reliable, (truly) rebuilt V4 cf powerhead for less than 1600 I'd like to know where. And even if you did find one for 1600 you'd still have to pull yours, undress it, redress the "new" one, install it, clean the carbs, do the water pump and set all the linkages.

Thanks for the info, what difference in #'s of torque are we talking about bettween a 115 and my 140?? more torque it sounds like that would allow me to run a higher pitch prop than on a 115, right??

All the V4 OMC crossflows from 110 to 140 hp are going to have pretty much the same torque. Don't even think about comparing a crossflow 140 to a 140 looper.

All 1984 & earlier OMC outboards are flywheel rated, not sure when some other OE's started the propshaft rating.

Merc started prop rating in 1982 on the inline sixes and the V6s.
