78 85HP force - setting the carb linkage

Hi everyone, great site, I have already learned so much. I do have a question about setting the carb linkage on my motor - how do I do this? I can get the engine to run well but not consistantly. I have a feeling this may be the cause??

Well, what I would do, not knowing your particular engine completely, but in general. With the motor off, put it in forward gear, then take off your cables (shift, & throttle) at the motor, so they're not restricting you. Then open the throttle fully at the motor by hand where the cable linkage connects, and see if the carburetor butterflies are fully open, & both matching, if so, you're good,,, if not, adjust only the carb. linkage(s) (not the timing linkage, at this time) to make it so. (also take notice of where your timing advance plate moves to under the flywheel at full throttle, for future reference).

mine always worked perfectly by backing off idle setting to zero, loosening the linkage set screws, letting the springs pull each carberator back to full stop, re-tightening set screws, and resetting idle. I would always double check WOT butterflies per manual but they were always perfectly aligned for me.
