My 96 Johnson will not go to full throttle
I have enouugh oil and it is not overheating
But my check engine and tach no longer function
Thinking that it is going into safe mode because of this I was wondering how one would check this. I checked all the wires and found no short's. Thanks

Re: 96 Johnson outboard will not go to full throttle

I will assume this motor is a V4 or V6. On the port cylinder head there is a two wire heat sensor. If the motor overheats, one temp sensor lead grounds and turns on the overheat light on the check engine tach. The other temp sender wire grounds to send a signal to the powerpack to turn off the spark to 1/2 the motor. This is the SLOW system. You can test it by starting and warming up the motor. Now run it for a while and see if the heads get too hot to touch. If not, disconnect the port temp sensor and see if your WOT RPM improves. if the RPM increases then the temp sensor is likely bad, and causing the SLOW system to be activated incorrectly.

Re: 96 Johnson outboard will not go to full throttle

I do not have a v4 or v6 it is a 2 cyclinder i pulled the temp sensor I think it looked like it any way but there was no change then I pulled another wire on the other side and the motor now goes to full throttle if I had a way of knowing the wiring diagram to the motor it would help.
Is there a way to identify the wiring to this motor?
