Post 115 HP Evinrude Flywheel Removal

I have a 1990 115 HP V-4 that I need to pull the flywheel from. What's the best technique to hold the flywheel while removing the nut and then pull the flywheel?

If you use an impact wrench to take it off, you still need some sort of a flywheel holder to hold it to properly torque the nut when reinstalling. Don't think you can get by without using a torque wrench. Tons of motors have been ruined that way.

I just removed my flywheel from a 1998
Johnson 115.
Used a flat Bar placing the back of the 45 degree
angle against the timer mark and the end in the
teeth of flywheel. Get a 2-3 foot piece of pipe and use
to extend breaker bar. Some one holds the flat bar
while you use the extended breaker bar.

I used vise-grips to hold the flywheel. Sounds terrible but it worked without slipping.

Does anyone know the thread spec on the three holes in the flywheel for the puller. They don't match anything in my puller kit. I am not sure if they are partially stripped or not.

Grade-8 bolts will work. Don't attempt it with the grade 5 bolts usually provided. Don't pull on the outer diameter of the flywheel when your are removing it. Be sure the flywheel and crankshaft tapers are clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 ft lbs when you are done. Just thinking you tightened it enough with a regular wrench would be a fatal mistake.

What's the diameter and thread pitch on those bolts. I think mine may be partially stripped, I'd like to clean them up with a tap before proceeding.

Would some anti-seize compound on the mating surfaces hurt when putting the flywheel back on?

You really want clean & dry mating surfaces. Anti-seize isn't necessary - it's supposed to go on tight.
