Hey, I was looking at a used 1977 Bass Stinger 17' with a 50hp evinrude, and was just wondering what some of your opinions are on the motor size. Sounds to me like it may be a little weak for a 17 footer. Im trying to get the exact model # so I can check the boats weight.

There is a link to ebay for pictures if that helps. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check the HP rating tag for maximum horsepower. An engine that is no less than 75% of the maximum would be acceptable. Anything less than that and you will likely be unhappy.

Re: Strong enough engine?

I have a 17 ft. Bass Tracker with 50 hp 'rude (48 hp to be exact). Granted my boat's aluminum but it is a v-hull. My 48 pushes it along nicely. I just spent a week in Arkansas skiing and tubing with it, sometimes with 4 adults along. It planes right up with the moderately pitched prop and will top out at 31 mph with two people aboard. My hull's rated for 90 hp and I feel the 48 is certainly adequate. But who doesn't want more power!
