I have a 1974 15HP model 15404S, serial number 0006557 that shuts off when hot. After the unit cools for 3-5 minutes I can restart it and it will continue to run if I do not run over 3/4 throttle. I finally decided to pop the flywheel off and see what is wrong. It appears that this motor only has a driver coil, part #0763784 - according to the schematic for this model on ishopmarine.com website:

http://www.ishopmarine.com/ishop/js...37&path=BMC~A0000021~M0011581~M0011613~M00116

It does not have a "stator assembly", part # 20, #0581387, that I see in the drawing. I have owned this motor for 25 years and have never had a problem with it. This is the first time I've had to remove the flywheel. Any ideas or advice would certainly be appreciated.

Re: Magneto questions

The stator assembly is only used on electric start models. It is to recharge the battery.

Re: Magneto questions

Is the water pump working? It may be weak and allowing the motor to overheat. The coil may be failing under hot load. Next time it stops, check for spark...if there is none hot the coil may be suspect.

About 1975 or so there was a rash of "stopping when hot" problems with the early 9.9-15hp motors. The driver coil was redesigned and I think it now has a blue color to it. Even though resistance wise it checks out OK, replace it with the newer one. They only used than Energy Transfer system from '74 to 76, then they went to CD ignition.
