Any idea on my mercury's year.

I just bought a 1983 glasstream with a straight 6 for $250. It is missing the lower unit, but has good compression in all 6 cylenders. The serial number is no longer present, but I found a raised number (9486262) on the carbeurator side of the motor. I was just wondering if anyone could help me identify my motor by this number. Thank you in advance.

Thats not a serial number. Look for a welsh plug with a number stamped in it. On a V-6 they are on top.

It's a straight 6. Is it still on top? I plan on picking up a manual tommorow as I also need to rewire the motor.

You can look at maxrules.com or themarinedoctor.com to get the year. My '76 has the serial number stamped on the starboard side of the engine block near the rear and close to of the fuel pump.
