Can't Change Impeller On Evinrude..help!!

I HAVE A 40hp EvinrudeTE40FLENM that I am trying to change the impeller and I ran into trouble. ... I removed all the bolts (5) and the lower unit dropped down a bit but wouldn't drop on down. .. It's lose and will move up and down easily and go "CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK". ... Something is holding the darned thing from coming off. .... Can anyone help me. ..... THANKS!!. .... ted

You have failed to disconnect the shift rod. It runs from the lower unit to just under the power head. There will be some fastener there under the lower carb. Disconnect. DO NOT TURN THE ROD. This is a set length and you'll mess things up if you turn it. Look at the orientation and put it back the same way

I am having the same problem, I have 25 hp 1973, I cant get the damn thing down, either I feel like getting out the heavy artillery.

definatly the shift rod if you havnt already released it. also, check if you have, you may have missed a bolt on the lower unit, i did that the other day.

Pizazz, you should have started your own thread.

there is a plate on the side of the leg. remove it, then remove the bottom bolt on the connector.
