Changed a coil in my 4hp Evinrude and the new coil is not giving me a 1/4 inch spark, its a very weak spark about 1/8 inch, the original on #2 is giving a 1/4 inch spark. i have tried switching the coils with each other to confirm contacts and wires are ok.the weak spark follows the new coil. Is it possible they gave me a wrong coil. the original number on the old coil is 510161, the one on the new coil is 512154 and also has this number on it too 583248,18GZ-0A. Model of motor is 4606MC ,70845. 1976 for model year. the motor will run but poor starting ,poor idle .
Thanks , Martin........

Have you set the points and checked the condensor for that cylinder, Nitram?

Re: coil problems 4hp Evinrude

Must be a full moon..just changed a coil on a 84 4hp..slapped a new used working one in, still no fire top plug. UUGG..ran fine before a winter pickle (neighbors)
I ran a cardboard fingernail file on the points for a good polish, works now.
Anyway, ya say ya flipped colis, samo-samo..
Like JB said, did ya do the same point side? If so, polish or new Points/Con. If you switched coils on diff point sets, well, possible a bad/shorted coil..happens.
But 1/8 is plenty spark to fire a 4hp..might want to go through the carb too if a hard starter (also make darn sure the wire probe in the the coil wire is straight, and going into the wire copper core wire too)

yes I checked both condensors and point settings , so not sure what to do with it , I suppose if 1/8 inch is enough to fire a 4 hp ,then we'll look else where for the problems. Thanks

nitram, you said the weak spark follows the new coil. That's pretty good evidence that the coil is bad.
