remote shift cable

My brother just bought this boat. 1978 Searay with a newer 5.7 engine. It shifts into and out of forward fine, but won't shift into reverse. When I unhook the remote cable and manually shift it using the shift cable it shifts fine both forward and reverse. When moving the remote cable with it off there is a lot of movement in the cable going into forward and it will come back to neutral, but going into reverse there is little if any movement. I can pull the cable out with a pair of pliers, but it's stiff. Adjustment in the shift box or new cable or what?

Re: remote shift cable

I'll tell my brother. Of course this was supposed to be one of those boats that only needed a fuel pump. We replaced it and now it's running (only if you bypass the oil pressure switch) and now this shifting problem

pull the cable out and as was said. It needed replacing. It had about a 4 inch split in it. Now if I can get it adjusted right.
