Talking longshaft on shortshaft transom

Okay I've read all the notes in here, One person said you could use a longshaft outboard on a shortshaft transom. But he did not elaborate and I got the feeling there would be drawbacks doing this.
Now the reason I ask about this is I have a 35hp 2stroke mecury from 1988 and I would like if practical to put it on a 1990 achilles 14ft which has very large tubes and could support it with no problem but after measuring transom it is made for a shortshaft. I understand I can get a transom elevator but who wants to spend a couple hundred dollars if not necessary. Okay what are the big drawbacks? speed is not really a major factor with me. Being splashed with water might get to me after a while :-)
thanks for all opinions

No drawbacks, you can run it like that .... I have before, it does create drag and won't perform to 100% of it's ability but you will move forward if that is what you are asking, it is not always that water will splash back into the boat ..... make sure your boat is properly inflated and give is a try ..... make sure the motor's trim is set up nicely ....

IMO, just make sure the motor is fastened to transom tight, as it may try to lift up off the boat.
