Was riding at WOT and the engine started losing power and would cut back to lower rpms. Got back to the ramp and started diagnosing, and noticed the bobber in my fuel filter cup had risen, meaning there was water in my fuel. I drained the cup, and went back out and encountered the same problem, and the bobber had risen yet again.

I have an inline fuel/water separator between the tank and the outboard.

Before I take it to the shop, I was wondering if you all could suggest how I can go about trying to solve this issue myself. I was thinking I could drain the fuel, install a new fuel/water separator, and inspect the fuel system components for leaks, then put new fuel in, and run the engine with the muffs and see if the bobber rises again.

Another question I had was whether the Yamaha fuel/water separators need to be drained after they separate out a certain amount of water. I've seen other brands that have a drain, but don't see one on mine. Wondering if it's full and no longer separating water?

most likly the water seperator is full of water and is now passing it along. it should be changed very 6 months regaurdless.you may have a fuel tank or fill cap leakingas long as it has not gotten to the VST I would change the water seperator andclean the engine filter, there is a drain on the VST you can open and see if any water made it to the VST.

I have a spare separator, so I'll go with your recommendation and see if that fixes the problem.

Excuse my ingnorance, but what is the VST? And if water made it to the VST, what course of action should I then pursue?

Hopefully nothing has messed up my VST. Sounds like more work than I'm qualified to do!
