Mercruiser 5.7 MPI question

I have a 2000 Rinker 270 w/MC 5.7 MPI/Bravo 3. Ran it the other day for 45 minutes. Ran like a watch then I heard what sounded like the transom step banging on the transom. At first no loss of power and bang was every three minutes or so. Then it began to increase in frequency, still with no loss of power, then the engine started to sputter and then died. Turns over fine, but no spark. I have power to the coil and distributer but nothing out of the coil. Any ideas before I get a scan tool and read the fault codes? Is the Mercruiser diagnostic plug in common or specific? Any idea where I can get the fault code references?

Codes may not help you much on this one. Kinda sounds like you broke the distributor drive gear. Pull the cap and see if the rotor turns when you crank the engine.
