Default 1989 Evinrude 9.9 extra long shaft conversion

I've got an 89 9.9 rude extra long shaft and I want to convert it to a short shaft, from what I've been reading, it looks pretty easy to do ....if I can find the parts.......

I've searched e-bay, and done some google searches and have not been able to find a short drive shaft for it, the engine is a low hour engine (less then 20) and looks and runs like it's brand new, so I don't want to put an old nasty looking lower unit on it from a short shaft, I'd like to be able to find a driveshaft for it and convert what I have, I understand I also need to convert the shift rod, or at least shorten it.

can you guys give me some pointers on where to look for parts? or any other ideas or pointers on my "attempt" at this conversion?

Also, what years are interchangable with it? if I find a short shaft out of an older or newer engine, is it going to work with mine?

or if someone has a short shaft they want to convert to an extra long shaft, let me know, I game for some horse trading.

Hi Stuart....

Any short shaft from 86' on up will work. Short shift rod too.

PN's are....short drive shaft.....341590....bout' $160 new.
short shift shaft.....318992....bout' $20 new.

You might check at some of the local shops or marinas...they may have them laying around.

that's not a bad price for new, I'll just go that route, thanks for the info, I'm sure I can sell my long shaft stuff on ebay and recoupe some of the cost.

I was looking at a couple of lower units on ebay, but they were nasty looking, all pitted on the oputside and who knows what's wrong on the inside, and decided I didn't want to put something that looks that bad on the bottom of my outboard.

I should have asked here first, those numbers should save me a bunch of searching time!

I'm about ready to do the short shaft conversion, but want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row first, I found the parts on the internet so will order them, I've also ordered the maintenance manuals for the 9.9 but their not here yet, should arrive any day, however, I don't see that's it's to awful difficult to do the conversion and figured I'd order the parts now, so to be on the safe side, to make sure I get everything covered because I'm going to have the lower unit off the motor anyway, I was going to order the drive shaft, the shift shaft, a water pump kit, and a lower unit seal kit.

I did see on the internet somewhere that there's also what they called an impeller shaft? but from the exploded view images I've been looking at, it looks like the impeller goes on the drive shaft, so maybe someone just worded it wrong? I'm guessing that the statement I read about the "impeller shaft" is the drive shaft, two of the same, just worded different, am I missing something here?

are there any other parts I should order or do I pretty much have everything covered? I was going to place the order now so the parts don't come to far behind the maintenance manuals.

impeller goes on the driveshaft - impeller shaft is probably a misnomer. Other than that, it's all pretty straight forward. Why the LU seal kit? Are you rebuilding the LU? If not, you don't need it. You should be able to swap out the shafts w/o disassembly.

I didn't know that the lower comes off intact, I thought it would at least break some of the seals, there's nothing wrong with the LU, I just wanted to make sure I have all my bases covered when I start the conversion, I'll skip the seal kit, the whole job sounds pretty easy to me, but then again, I've never done one before either.

this is a little off topic but I've also been looking at 12 foot aluminum boats to put this motor on but haven't found anything I like yet, and the one I looked at yesterday was only rated for up to a 7.5 horse outboard (a 12 footer), so should I be looking for something bigger then a 12 foot aluminum boat for this motor? maybe start looking for a 14 footer or something? my reasoning behind wanting an small aluminum boat is because if I get a small boat thats riveted, I can practice on it with painting and rivet replacement before I ever tackle the job of painting or rivet replacement on the big starcraft should it ever need it, I think having something small gives me a bit of a learning curve, and if I'm going to screw something up, I'd rather screw up a throw away little boat rather then my 18 foot starcraft.

Comes off as a unit. Nothing you'd be getting in the LU kit will be compromised.

Should be able to find a deep-v 12' er rated for 9.9. Certainly, the 14s. will take it.

I know it might be a waste of money in some people opinions to do this conversion, but it's such a nice outboard that I figured I would be better to spend the extra, get new parts and do it right. I'll keep ya posted on the progress, mabe take some pictures as I go so others with the same questions will have something to look at.

I've been hitting craigslist pretty hard trying to find a boat, but so far the ones that have showed up are the 12 foot shallow hulls, with a beam of about 46 to 48 inches wide, I'd like to find something a little wider and deeper then that, so I'm still looking, one will turn up eventually

I found a short shaft and shift rod from a 9.9 Evinrude, the guy has no idea of the year though, the model number of the motor the drive shaft is out of is E10RCSE is this going to work with my 89 9.9? my model number is E10ELCES

Do you still have the extra long shaft, housing and whatever is left over?
I need to convert my 15 hp evinrude to extra long shaft. I understand that a 15 uses the same shaft and housing as a 9.9. If so please reply to me or call me at 808-2212562 and perhaps I could buy those items from you.
