Default 1964 Evinrude 75hp, reverse lock lever

Does someone have a photo of the reverse lock installed that you could send to me or post. I think a mid-60s 65-90 HP would have the same setup. Currently I have a wood dowel attached to the cable to release the lock to tilt the motor. It's probably a lot easier to flip the reverse lock and have two hands to tilt the motor.

The one I had on my early sixties big twin and on my '59 FatFifty was a latch in the center of the transom clamp. You push it down to release the lock and over to latch it in the unlock position. Since reverse never worked on my Fat Fifty, I never used it. Still if you are gentle in reverse, the motor shouldn't pop up.
Hope this helps...

Yours sounds the same as my 40HP. The BRP parts blowup shows a lever that you would toggle horizontally left to release and right to lock. I just want to see one installed and get some feedback on it's use.

Question Re: 1964 Evinrude 75hp, reverse lock lever

The levers on my '61 40HP and the '58 50 HP were basically identical. Are you missing yours?

The '64 75hp is nothing at all like the 40 and 50. It is a hinged flapper that flips from right to left, sort of like a door. Imagine tying a string to the doorknob, and opening and closing it. It pulls on the string as you swing the door one way. That is exactly how the tilt lock lever works. There is a ball on the end of a cable. The cable is threaded through the lever and attached to the locking levers. Flip the lever one way, it pulls the cable and lifts the locking levers. Flip the lever the other way and it lowers the cable and levers to lock position.

Hit an underwater object while running at high speed with it locked down and the tilt lock automatically releases so the motor can tilt up. Trouble is it happens almost instantly and the lever we are talking about doesn't have time to "normalize" itself fully one way or the other....and hits the transom. That's how they get broken.

FR, that sounds exactly right. I would just like to replace it for ease of tilting the motor. I'll have to check to see if that lever is still available. Likely not but sometimes they surprise me.

Lever is part number 307231, changed to 312463
Pin is part number 308695
Cable is part number 377925, changed to 381440

Available thru your Johnson or Evinrude dealer. Hang onto your chair when you find out how much they cost.
