Default 1977 85hp evinrude with 20 inch shaft

am i right to guess that this is a short shaft ?
also is the 20 inch number what my transom should measure?
how do you figure out the correct motor transom height combo?

Short shaft is 15", NB. You have a long shaft.

It should fit transoms that measure about 20" vertically from the transom top.

The transom dimensions are only approximate anyhow. But yes, they should be measured vertically.
