Merc 60hp tell tale stream

My 1988 Merc 60 is running great, but when using it on the weekend I noticed somthing about the tell tale stream. It seems when the engine is turned off when at full operating temperature then re-started again within a minute or so, I get steam coming out of the tell tale for about 5 to 10 seconds before the stream starts again. This may be normal, but I just want to be sure. BTW the water pump impellor is new.

I have the same motor and same year. It sounds to me like the water is running back to the pump and the motor will heat up a little after the water is gone. It could be you need to replace the whole pump. This happened to me. I put in a new impeller and it still heated up. Replaced the whole pump and it pumps good. Must have had a hole in the lower houseing somewhere. If you let the motor set for half hour and started it up, might not produce steam.???????????????? This would tell you if the pump is draining back.........................Jerry
