6 HP Evinrude prop question

I just bought a 1972 6 hp Evinrude. It runs good, but I was wondering if I could increase the speed by switching to a 3 blade prop. It currently has the standard two blade prop. How will this affect the performance? How do pitch and blade size impact performance?

The original propellers are carefully selected by the factory engineers for the average boat on which the motor is normally expected to be used. Unless you have a very unusual situation, save your money.

Re: 6 HP Evinrude prop question

I have to go along with leave well enough alone.
Generally speaking More pitch (a Higher number) give less power but more speed.Less pitch (lower number)more power but less speed.
These generalizations depend greatly on the motor, boat, load etc.
With a 6 hp you are pretty much running at max load all the time.
With one person sitting in the middle seat with a tiller extension you might be able to plane.Maybe 12 to 15 mph. This would depend on the size, weight and style of boat and how much you weigh. With very careful motor setup and minimum load you might squeeze out another 1 mph.
