something dont look right on this lark

this is a extended shaft model but it looks as though someone try to put a short shaft on it.is this how its suppose to look or is there something wrong here?

an whats makes it worse is that this outboard was used in salt water and i dont think salt water should be going up there

model# 35516 = short shaft, #35517 = long shaft. that is if we are talking about your 1959. from the picture its a short shaft. as far as i can tell it looks fine. i changed the parts of my motor to make it a long shaft so someone could have changed yours to a short shaft

thanks for the info this is a #35517 but it just dont seem right to have that gape right there
