I'm having a problem with my 2000, 90 hp merc. It will not start. fuel is getting thru the filter, and engine will run if gas is sprayed into throat of carbs. It has not been run in 3 yrs, i think the carbs are gummed up.

Yeah, it sounds like the carbs are gummed up. When you coming up to maine again?

What a dope I am. Now I know why i'll never make a good mechanic. I had forgotten about the choke. I was never choking it, just moving the fast idle lever, thinking it was the choke! 30 minutes later it was running at low idle. Anyway with some advice from a named "willyclay" and some other info that i read from other post, something clicked and i knew what i was doing wrong.
