Re: johnson 6hp sea horse runs only w/choke

It should be a 1977... If I would you knowing what I have learned from all these good folks here... I would do pretty much what I am doing. I recently purchased a 1974 Johnson 6hp model 6R74C. And I had similar fuel problems. I ordered a new impeller, some good marine gear oil, drain gaskets, fuel pump, carb kit, points and condensers, my coils seem to be ok, and I got a new gas tank and hose. If you will go to the thread I posted, you should pick-up some good advice to help you out. My thread is titled: 1974 Johnson 6hp 6R74-C. Its about done made it to the 4th or 5th page or so. And I'm sure some other folks will be offering you some good advice... Fishermanms

Set it at 1-1/2 turns for beginning. Adjust for best idle after it starts and warms up.

But that is not your problem. You didn't get the carb clean. The high speed orfice in the very bottom of the carb bowl, deep behind the hex drain plug, is dirty. It must be absolutely positively shiny CLEAN! Any crud or coating on it at all will cause your described problem of running only with the choke on.
