How do I test stator and trigger

How do I test stator and trigger on my 1982 mercury 70 hp??? I have a pretty good meter, just don't know what to test, also are the tests done while cranking engine or just off with battery connected???

WOW what a great source of information It really spells it out
for you. Makes diagnosing much easier. Takes all the guess
work out of it. Nice easy to see diagrams also. Thanks for the
great info. It helps keeps boating affordable.

Great link! I bookmarked it for future reference. I'm trying to figure out which ignition system I have on my 1987 70hp. Is it the Battery CD system or the Alternator Driven system.

Does the 1971 merc model 1150 have the Battery/CD/distributor system or which system would I use to check my trigger. I have used the jumer of the brown and white and ground the black and no spark. But I suspect there are some other problems, and would like to try to find out which is bad. :eek:
