Question 94 Mercury + Tach question

I am trying to figure out why the tach on my boat has stopped working. I have a 94 Mercury 4cyl 40hp Pro Series engine on a BassTracker aluminum bass boat.

How can I find out what types of voltages I should be seeing on the cable running from the motor to the instrument cluster ? There is no info on the cable and its connections in the owners manual or maintenance book that came with the engine.

I am not familiar with boat engines and wiring, as this is my first boat, but I am handy with cars, small engines, and electrical devices. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the link, that is excellent.

Questions.... page 3 of that manual shows the outboard wiring to the tach. To the "send" post it has a grey wire off the controls and a yellow wire off the motor. Can it be either one ?

If I choose to run new wire to the motor what is that yellow wire run to ?

Thanks.
