Alpha 1 Shifting Problems

Hello all I have a 1995 Maxum with a 4.3L Mercruiser with an Alpha 1 outdrive and its been having trouble shifting into forward and reverse gears. As of now it shifts into gear fine if I shift quickly (As in quickly I mean their is alot of play between the neutral position and shiftpoint. I quickly go from the neutral position to the ending shift point almost to where the engine would rev). If I ease it into gear it will just grind and maybe eventually catch to engage the forward gear. Just wondering if their is some kind of adjustment or wear part that needs replaced for this? I am sure some grinding is normal but I think this is very excessive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Alpha 1 Shifting Problems

Welcome to iboats.....:)
This actually sounds normal to me......
With the engine off push the throttle until it finds the detent.......
When you shift with the engine running, you should move it to that spot in one quick motion, not tenative at all.....
Same with reverse......
It should 'clunk' into gear.....
Same pulling it out of gear, though no clunk.....
If it continues to grind using this method, then the lower shift cable probably needs to be replaced......;)
