Default 1990 Bayliner Capri 50 hp to 135 hp swap

I have a 1990 capri 1700 with the FORCE 50 and was wondering if I can put a 1974 135 hp evinrude on this boat? Will the extra wieght/power of this motor be a problem?

What is the maximum hp rating for your boat? My 1986 Capri is 18' and rated for up to 140hp. You can over power your boat if you choose to, however, you run some risks. Not only will it probably strain your boat, but if you are caught with an overpowered boat, you are probably going to have to pay a pretty hefty fine.

There is also a 1980 chrystler 100hp that would only be 15hp more than the optional 85 hp force that this boat came with. I'm wondering if it's typical that the force 50hp that's in it now only go's 25-30 mph with 2 people in it or is something wrong (prop) or (plugs).

What does your plaque say as rated max motor size? my 91 18' Capri says 90.

Go to NADA and look up outboard motors. It will list the difference in weight. I am putting a 1975 Mercury 150HP inline 6 cylinder on my 1989 17' capri open bow.

I don't like the extra weight of the motor especially with the built in tank in the extreme back, but with the open bow, people can ride up there if need be. I already have anything so I am going to try it out - if it handles poorly, I can figure something else out.

I think the 1st thing I would look at, almost before an increased hp issue, is a reasonably comparable weight.
In my opinion the weight (if the motor is substantially heavier) will be a constant issue for the boat and supporting it on the transom. Whereas your driving habits might be more likely to determine if you are going to get into situations as a result of too much power.
With respect to motor weight I know that certain models (hp wise) were real 'fatties'...and I don't think I would want one of those on my boat.
