how old is my merc 75hp

Well I have just joined you all and I am after something already! I bought my fletcher black max with a 75hp engine last year from a broker. I have given up waiting for him to get back to me and I thought maybe one of you could be so kind as to tell me how old my merc is. it has a seriel number of 9712800 on what looks like a core or freeze plug. I would be very grateful if you could help. I hope I have posted this in the correct place I only joined ten mins ago.

I am a little dissapointed to discover that it is so old. But wow that was a fast answer. I supose it will last for another couple of seasons I HOPE!

Maintain it and it will last a long long time. Get a manual for it. At least every two years change the water pump impeller and change the gear box oil every year. Look for water or metal shavings in the oil.
Most of us in these forums are running motors older than years. With proper care they run like they were new. My Mercury 850 is a 1977 and still going very strong.
