The suffix letter on all johnson motors indicates any mid-year changes that may or may not have been made. They start the year with what seems to be an arbitrarily selected letter, and if there is a change in any parts during the production year the letter will change to indicate that. So-o-o-o, the R may mean nothing, or it may indicate some part was modified. The parts book will tell if a particular part is affected.
