Merc Classic 50 wont spool up under load

I have got a mec calassic 50 1988 that just wont spool up in the lake it is fine in neutral or dry docked.Im no marine machanic but i do know my way around an engine.Started at fuel tank rebuilt carbs new lines.Idels fine will troll around all day but no get up and go.Here were it got weird for me I was pulling in to the trailer got angered threw it in to reverse and it spools up in reverse but not forward please help me the good trout fishing is coming up.
